A Guide for Parents

Understanding the Academy Categories (1-4)

The Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) categorises football academies from 1 to 4. For parents, understanding this system is vital as it dictates the level of investment, coaching hours, and educational support your child will receive. It provides a transparent framework designed to enhance the quality and quantity of home-grown players in the UK.

While a higher category indicates more resources and a more intensive full-time program, every level offers a structured environment for development. Knowing what each category entails helps you make informed decisions about your child's footballing future without the pressure of empty promises.

Category 1: The Elite Tier

Category 1 academies represent the pinnacle of youth development in the UK. These elite institutions operate with the highest level of investment and provide the most comprehensive environment for young athletes to transition into professional football. For parents, this tier signifies a commitment to excellence across every facet of the player's journey.

  • Elite Facilities: Access to world-class training pitches, advanced sports science labs, and professional-grade recovery suites.
  • Full-Time Education: Integrated academic programs that run alongside intensive football training to ensure a balanced development.
  • Highest Investment: Massive funding into coaching staff, recruitment networks, and player welfare services.
  • Professional Pathway: The strongest direct link to Premier League and Championship first-team environments.

Category 2: Performance Focused Development

Category 2 academies provide a professional environment with a focus on holistic development. While resources may be slightly more regional than Category 1, they still offer high-level facilities and a strong pathway to professional football.

  • Hybrid Training: A blend of part-time and full-time training schedules depending on age groups.
  • Professional Pathway: Proven tracks into senior squads and professional leagues with dedicated scouting.
  • Solid Infrastructure: Quality training turf, classroom facilities, and medical support staff.
  • Educational Support: Programs often include integrated schooling or study time to balance sport and academics.

Category 3: Regional Development

Category 3 academies focus on nurturing local talent with a structured, regional approach. While they operate with fewer resources than Category 1 or 2, they provide a vital pathway for players developing at a steady pace within a professional environment.

• Part-Time Programs: Training typically occurs 3-4 times per week, allowing for a balance with standard schooling.

• Regional Recruitment: Focuses on talent within a specific local radius, reducing travel demands for families.

• Professional Standards: Licensed coaching and structured games programs against other Category 3 clubs.

Strategic Focus
  • Focuses exclusively on age groups U17 to U21.
  • Provides a pathway for players released from higher-category academies.
  • Emphasises tactical maturity and preparation for first-team football.

Category 4 Academy: Late Entry Specialists

Category 4 academies focus specifically on late developers and the Professional Development Phase (ages 17-21). Unlike other categories, they do not typically run full foundation or youth phases, making them a strategic choice for players entering the system at a later stage.

Facilities & Staff
  • Efficient use of regional facilities rather than vast multi-million pound campuses.
  • Streamlined coaching staff focused on the transition to senior football.
  • Lower operational costs but maintained professional standards.
