 Retain and Release - Explained

For young footballers the 'Retain and Release' period is often the most significant milestone of the season. It is the formal process by which professional academies decide which players will be offered a new contract (retained) and which will be allwed to leave the club (released) to find a new club.

The Decision-Making Process

Clubs evaluate players throughout the season, but formal decisions are usually communicated during specific windows depending on the age group.

Foundation and Youth Development (U9-U16):

Decisions are based on long-term potential. At U16, the stakes are highest, as this is when clubs decide who will be offered a two year Scholarship.

Professional Development (U18-21)

Players  at this at this stage are fighting for their first professional contract.

Retained: The Offer of Re-engagement

If a club wishes to keep a player, they must issue a formal 'Offer of Re-engagement.'

Terms: Under FA and League rules, the offer must generally be on terms of no less favourable than the player's current deal.

Compensation: If a player is offered a new contract but choses to reject it to move elsewhere, the original club is often entitled to a compensation fee

(providing the player is under 24), recognising the investment made in their training.

Released: The Exit Pathway

Being released does not mean the end of a career; it often marks the start of a new chapter.

YD7 vs. YD10 Forms: These are the crucial documents for a departing player.

YD7: A clean break where the player is released 'withou compensation,' making it easier for them to join a new club.

YD10: A release 'with compensation,' meaning any new club must pay a set fee to the academy.

While dates can shift slightly each season, the standard timeline for the 2025/26 season follows these milestones:

Milestone and Deadline

U16 Scholarship Decisions - Usually by March 1st

U18/U21 Pro Decisions - Communications typically starts in March/April.

The Retain List - Must be submitted to the FA/League by June 1st.

Contract Expiry - Most registrations formally expire on June 30th.

Key Dates to Remember
A Note on Welfare

Under current safeguarding rules, any release of a player under the age of 18 must involve a face to face meeting with a parent or guardian present. Clubs are also increasingly expected to provide mental health support for players transitioning out of the academy system.
